The wold's largest mosque built of sun-dried mud bricks makes a stunning site. The Great Mosque of Djenne, sometimes known as the Grand Mosque of Djenne, is the most famous tourist attraction in Mali and probably the most unique mosque in the world.

Significance: Originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed in 1907, it is the largest mud-brick building in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

Key Features:

  • Constructed using sun-baked earth bricks (ferey) and coated with a plaster made from mud and rice husks.
  • Features toron (wooden beams) that serve both as decoration and scaffolding for annual replastering.
  • Includes three minarets and a large courtyard.

 

Note: The mosque is central to the community’s cultural life, with an annual festival where locals reapply the mud plaster to maintain the structure.
